The AP-2 stretch near Les Borges Blanques, in Lleida, has historically suffered serious pile-up accidents due to the persistent fog characteristic of the Les Garrigues region.

Extreme visibility conditions frequently forced authorities to limit or even close traffic, with the associated economic and safety impact. The lack of a dynamic information system adapted to these conditions left drivers without real- time alerts, increasing the risk of chain accidents on a stretch with high freight and passenger traffic density.

What we did
from Fixalia

We have participated in the development of this innovative anti-fog system through the manufacture and supply of Variable Message Signs from the DEVA range, equipped with 5G-VX technology and high-brightness through-hole LEDs.

The solution has been deployed on gantries installed every 500 metres in both directions to ensure clear and visible information even in critical visibility conditions.

  • DEVA signs with high-brightness through-hole LEDs: maximum daytime and night-time visibility, and in dense fog conditions.
  • 5G-VX technology with multi-protocol connectivity for integration with the Ministry of Transport's central management system.
  • Coordinated deployment across 32 gantries along the stretch, ensuring continuous and consistent information for all drivers.

Results

The system has established itself as a benchmark in intelligent road safety for adverse weather conditions.

In 2025 alone, the system remained active for more than 400 hours due to dense fog episodes, allowing the motorway to remain safely operational in situations that would previously have required a complete closure.

This result has demonstrated the real value of well-dimensioned dynamic signage with high-reliability technology: it has not only improved driver safety, but has also avoided the economic and logistical costs associated with closing a strategic corridor like the AP-2.
